ORANJESTAD - Aruba Airport Authority N.V.’s (AAA) “Wings of Hope” (WoH) officially hands-over the Waste Sustainably project to UNESCO Schools Aruba Consortium consisting of Colegio Hilario Angela, EduCampus, International School of Aruba and Prinses Amalia Basisschool as the winner of the SDG School Champion Challenge 2022.
As part of WoHs SDG Awareness Goal, UNESCO Schools Aruba Consortium was officially announced as the winner back in June of the SDG School Champion Challenge 2022 and received AWG 20,000.00 to execute their waste sustainably plan, which included the installation of recycling stations at each of the 4 UNESCO schools to collect cardboard, metal, plastic, and glass as well as compost organic waste. Students and staff will participate in a workshop on the way to utilize these recycling centers most effectively and how to collect, process, and separate their waste to maximize efficiency. Each school will also receive a report back on how much waste they have collected and prevented from going into landfills.
Each school will have their own “Green Team” of students who will oversee the project and communicate all relevant information with their peers. “Green Team” members will also receive training by Plastic Beach Party and the Aruba Compost Club and in turn become trainers for any future team members, ensuring a youth-led and continuity of the project. Students will also be encouraged to apply the same principles at home and the community.
In the presence of AAA’s Wing of Hope workgroup, UNESCO Schools Aruba Consortium, Plastic Beach Party and Aruba Compost Club, the waste sustainably recycling stations were officially handed over. With the Waste Sustainably project, UNESCO Schools Aruba Consortium together with Plastic Beach Party and Aruba Compost Club will be able to collect, process and separate their waste and lead by example for other schools, organizations and the community.
WoH will continue to include students and the Aruban Community in projects that have an important sustainable impact for the community and create awareness on United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) whilst encouraging all to embrace changes that create a better and more sustainable future for all.
